MEng Chemical Engineering student, Thomas

How my Chemical Engineering degree laid the groundwork for a meaningful career

Thomas Graduate

Studying Chemical Engineering at Sheffield equipped me with the problem-solving skills, technical knowledge, and teamwork experience I now use daily as a Process Engineer in the nuclear sector. The hands-on projects, supportive staff, and cutting-edge facilities—especially the Diamond—prepared me for a challenging and rewarding career path.

During my placement, I applied biomedical engineering knowledge in real-world settings, developed key skills, and secured a graduate role.

Harriet BEng Biomedical Engineering with an Industry Placement Year

Harriet chose Biomedical Engineering because she loved how it brought together her passions across different subjects. Her placement at the Ministry of Defence not only allowed her to apply her skills in dynamic, real-world scenarios but also helped her secure an exciting post-graduation role.

I really enjoyed the artifacts project as it gave us the opportunity to conduct our own research and present the findings at the end.

Christine Thorogood BEng Materials Science and Engineering

Christine took part in the SURE scheme where they spent 6 weeks working with researchers from the University making novel cathodes for sodium ion batteries. "The fact that I had done this project put me in a really unique position where I had relevant experience before graduating my degree."
