As you take your next steps, we invite you to explore the School of Languages, Arts and Societies - a place defined by inspirational teaching, world-class research, and a deeply supportive community.  

We are incredibly proud of the work we do, and we can't wait to share it with you. We look forward to an exciting day of conversation - hearing about your aspirations and providing all the information you need to make the choice to study here. 

Arriving at your session

You will have booked to visit us 10am to 12.30pm or 2pm to 4.30pm on your offer holder day (list of dates below).  Please arrive in good time for the start of your booked session, as we'll need to scan the QR code from your booking to register you. There will also be lots of open day staff and ambassadors around campus to assist you. 

When booking, you'll be able to reserve a place for yourself and one guest at the department activities. To ensure safe venue capacities, the department will be unable to accommodate any additional unbooked visitors.

However, you're welcome to bring additional guests to accompany you on the day, and we would encourage these guests to take part in our range of central exhibitions and tours while the department activities are running.

Welcome & Interactive Taster Lecture: Experience Research-Led Teaching 

Join our academic staff for an interactive lecture based on cutting-edge research in Modern Languages & Cultures.

At Sheffield, our teaching is fundamentally research-led. This means our staff's specialist expertise and latest research findings are woven directly into your curriculum, ensuring you are always learning at the forefront of the field.

30 minutesExpert Insight & Student Life: Meet with our academics and current students over refreshments 

This session is your opportunity to engage directly with people who shape the course and live the student experience. 

For Academic Guidance: Speak directly with our academics- including the Programme Lead and Language Teaching Specialists - across all our major specialisms (French, German, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese & Latin American, Russian, Czech & Slavonic Studies). They are here to provide detailed insights into specialist culture modules, language teaching methods, Year Abroad options, and career opportunities.  

For the Student Perspective: Connect with current students to hear first-hand about the exciting Sheffield social scene, life in the city, and getting involved in student societies

60 minutes

BA Modern Languages and Cultures Programme Overview: 

Your future in languages: From curriculum to community and employability. 

This essential session provides a full and exciting overview of the BA Modern Languages and Cultures degree, seamlessly pulling together your taster experiences and language conversations. 

Explore:  A showcase of the diverse and compelling modules you will study from Year 1 through to graduation. 

Develop: Learn about the powerful knowledge and skills you'll develop through our distinctive student-centred approach to teaching and learning. 

Discover:  Our unique commitment to student experience, welfare, and critical employability skills.  

The final 15 minutes are dedicated to personal, authentic insights from our current students. They'll share their experiences of studying one, two or three languages, their favourite modules, and the life-changing rewards of the Year Abroad. 

This is your chance to gain a personal, insider view of student life and appreciate the career-defining value of a Language degree in today's increasingly globalised world.

Wrap Up and Your Next Steps: 

Q&A. Finish the day with confidence and a clear path forward!

In this session, we will address all remaining questions and comments you may have and provide a clear, concise guide to your official next steps - from accepting your offer to enrolment. 

Dual Degree Drop-in Session 

If you are studying a Modern Languages and Cultures degree with English, Linguistics, History or Music and want ask a question to an academic then this is perfect opportunity to do so.  Our Dual Degree Drop-in Session will take place between 12:30pm to 2pm on the ground floor foyer at Jessop West you will have the opportunity to chat with an academic about your dual degree.   

For the rest of the day, you'll have time to take part in the central tours and exhibitions detailed in our offer holder day guide.

Making the most of your offer holder day

Our offer holder days are designed as a full day experience with a range of activities available to help you get a feel for both your subject and the university. As well as attending your subject session we recommend spending the rest of your day visiting our accommodation, attending our range of tours and visiting our exhibitions.

International undergraduate scholarships

We are offering scholarships of £2,500 for each year (subject to a 60% average) of your undergraduate degree. The maximum value is £10,000 for four-year programmes.
