We are excited to announce that from 18 -19 June 2025 we will hold our second School of Medicine and Population Health Research and Innovation Meeting. This year will culminate in an exciting afternoon on 19 June with the Faculty of Health Showcase: bringing the research from all the schools across the Faculty together to showcase and celebrate the research of the Faculty and act as a catalyst for collaboration.

The events will be held within the Wave and will be a fantastic opportunity to hear about the research across the Faculty and will provide an opportunity for anyone involved in research to showcase their work and network with colleagues.

Workshop 1: Planning for impact, engagement and tools

18 June, 11.30am–12.40pm
Workroom 3, First Floor

This workshop is targeted for PI’s and aspiring PI’s. The workshop will explore past and present examples of impact case studies. In groups we will discuss how we can self-navigate the impact pathway from identifying our impact objectives to gathering and generating evidence. In short, this workshop will help you demonstrate the real-world benefits of your research.

Workshop 2: Outreach and engagement - how to do it?

18 June, 11.30am–12.40pm
Seminar Room 5 - First Floor

Participants will hear contrasting examples, across all 3 divisions, of how researchers have engaged with communities and stakeholders or reached out to  other groups to strengthen their research. This will be followed by table-top discussion on the benefits of outreach and engagement and how to take it forward as individuals and teams. 

Workshop 3: Mock Interview: watch it go wrong and learn how to make yours go right - how to do it?

Workroom 2, Ground Floor

This workshop is targeted at ECRs and other researchers who are interested in fellowships, it will include tips on how to prepare for the application with particular attention to the interview. There will be a panel of people who have been awarded fellowships to answer attendees' informal questions.

Workshop 4: Why is Team Development essential for funding success?

This workshop is targeted for PI’s and aspiring PI’s, we will look at how both the University and research funders support the development of researchers and the expectations on PIs. We will explore what funders are looking for in the development of research teams and what makes a good development section in funding applications. We will also cover how to navigate all the development opportunities available to you and your research team.

Workshop 5: Research to Reality: Your Guide to Knowledge Exchange & Commercialisation Success.

Workshop 6:  Making The Most of Social Media as a Researcher

18 June, 3.45pm–5pm
Seminar Room 5, First Floor

Sharing your research online is key for impact and knowledge exchange. In this workshop we will develop our social media profiles and personal branding as researchers, and learn how to effectively use social media for science communication. There will also be an opportunity for a Q&A panel with researchers in the School who are already making the most of social media to share their work with the public.

Plenary speaker 2025: Professor Solomon Tesfaye MB ChB, MD, FRCP

Solomon Tesfaye

Solomon Tesfaye is a Consultant Diabetologist at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and Honorary Professor of Diabetes Medicine at the University of Sheffield. He is also the Research Director of the Diabetes & Endocrinology Directorate. He was appointed NIHR Senior Investigator in March 2024.

His research projects include the epidemiology, risk factors, pathogenesis, CNS involvement and treatment of diabetic neuropathy and neuropathic pain. He has published a textbook of Diabetic Neuropathy, over 250 original articles and reviews including a landmark study in the NEJM and has an H-Index of 83. Solomon has served in several national (e.g. MRC DPFS) and international (US NIH) grant panels and has received over £21m grant funding as PI and co-applicant.

Solomon served as Chair of the International Consensus Panel on Diabetic Neuropathy and was awarded the Prestigious Camillo Golgi Prize of the European Diabetes Association in 2014 for outstanding scientific contributions in Diabetic Neuropathy. He also received the Arnold Bloom Award of Diabetes UK in 2017 for innovative and patient-centred diabetes care. Finally, he received the European Diabetes Association NEURODIAB Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024 for sustained, high quality research in Diabetic Neuropathy.
