Sociology offer holder days
As part of your offer holder day at Sheffield, you'll be spending some quality time getting to know the Department of Sociological Studies and your chosen course.
Arriving at the department
You will have booked to visit us 10am to 12.30pm or 2pm to 4.30pm on your offer holder day. Please arrive in good time for the start of your booked session, as we'll need to scan the QR code from your booking to register you.
Your arrival location is: Lecture Theatre 2 in the The Wave. You can view this on our interactive campus map, and there will also be lots of open day staff and ambassadors around campus to assist you.
If you arrive late for your booked session, please report to the general information stand on the Students’ Union concourse, where event staff will be able to help.
When booking, you'll be able to reserve a place for yourself and one guest at the department activities. To ensure safe venue capacities, the department will be unable to accommodate any additional unbooked visitors.
However, you're welcome to bring additional guests to accompany you on the day, and we would encourage these guests to take part in our range of central exhibitions and tours while the department activities are running.

Taster Seminars
You'll take part in one taster seminar related to your chosen course to give you a real taste of what it's like to be a student in the Department of Sociological Studies.
Below are the titles and summaries of the two taster seminars available to attend.
Taster Seminar 1
Games and Gatekeeping: Understanding why gaming culture - and our thinking around gaming - is 'stuck'
In this session students will be introduced to a number of sociological concepts to help students start to unpick why gaming culture can be described as 'stuck'. Students will be invited to think about how popular understandings around video games are produced, and how stereotypical constructions of 'gamers' are produced - and reproduced - by gaming culture itself, with consideration given to gender, sexuality and race.
Taster Seminar 2
The Modern Day "Mean Girls": Understanding Anonymous Apps
Anonymous apps - apps that allow users to send messages to others without revealing information that might identify them (e.g., their legal name) - are incredibly popular with teens. But have you ever noticed how quickly individual apps - YOLO, NGL, LMK, Tellonym, Sarahah - rise and fall in popularity? In this session, you'll learn why this trend has emerged. You'll also be asked to reflect on your own views and experiences of anonymous apps, and to think about how we might make them safer.
In this taster session, students will get a glimpse of what it’s like to take a class called Digital Identities at the University of Sheffield, through which our students gain a deeper understanding of their relationship to digital technologies.
