Celebrating our alumni and staff in the 2021 Queen’s Birthday Honours List

We are delighted to share and congratulate the alumni and staff from the University whose exploits and achievements have been recognised in the 2021 Queen’s Birthday Honours.

DBE (Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire)

Dame Helen Valerie Atkinson, DBE, CBE is a former member of staff from Sheffield, and currently Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Aerospace, Transport and Manufacturing at Cranfield University. She was recognised for services to Engineering and Education.

Helen Atkinson is one of the UK’s foremost engineering leaders. She has been a committed Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering since 2007, serving as Vice President, Trustee and Chair of its Education and Skills Committee between 2012 and 2017. Most recently, she has made a vital impact through chairing the oversight group for the Academy’s ‘This is Engineering’ campaign to encourage more young people into engineering.


CB (Companion of the Order of the Bath)

Dr David Bernard Kennedy, CB, CBE (BSc Economics with Econometrics 1991) is the Director General for Food, Farming and Animal and Plant Health with DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs). He was recognised for public service particularly during the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Stephen Philip Oldfield, CB (BA French and Spanish 1985) is the Chief Commercial Officer for the Department of Health and Social Care. He was recognised for services to EU Exit Preparedness and the Covid-19 Response.


CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire)

Edmund Arthur Lowndes De Waal, CBE, OBE (Diploma in Japanese Language 1992, Hon LittD 2013) is a noted artist, specialising in ceramics and writing. He was recognised for services to the Arts.


OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire)

Dr Christopher Martin Timperley, OBE (BSc Chemistry 1991) is a Fellow with the Chemistry and Operational Readiness Group, Defence Science and Technology Laboratory. He was recognised for services to UK Defence and Security.

Ian Lyn David Morrison, OBE (BA Ancient History and Classical Archaeology 1989) is Director of Policy and Evidence for Historic England. He was recognised for services to Heritage and Covid-19 Response.


MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire)

Jean McVAnn, MBE (BMedSci Specialist Community Nursing and Health Care Practice 1997) is a Founder and Chief Executive at The Gate Surgery in Rotherham, which specialises in providing care for socially excluded and vulnerable groups. She was recognised for services to the community in Rotherham.

Dr Michael Rogers, MBE (BSc Microbiology 1998) is the Assistant Director for Global Health Research for the NIHR Central Commissioning Facility. He was recognised for services to Covid-19 Research Funding.

Dr Thushantha De Silva, MBE is a Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Physician in Infectious Diseases at University of Sheffield. He was recognised for services to Covid-19 Research.

Victoria Ann Phipps, MBE (BA Architecture, 2007) is a Co-founder of D-Day Revisited. She was recognised for services to Veterans and the Commemoration of the Second World War.


BEM (Medal of the Order of the British Empire)

Adele Hague, BEM (Cert Conversion 2002) is a Nurse and the Healthy Child Programme Lead at Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust. She was recognised for services to Public Health during the Covid-19 Pandemic, during which she led the Children’s Hospital’s Covid-19 testing programme which expanded to support medical workers from across the city.
