Sheffield's Tokyo medal winners

Over the past two months we've delighted in watching the Olympics and Paralympics in Tokyo, and are extremely proud to welcome home three Sheffield medal winners.

Bryony Page, Hollie Pearne-Webb, Megan Shackleton

Throughout July, August and September we were proud to throw our support behind some of our incredible athletes competing at the Olympics and Paralympics in Tokyo. What's more, three of Sheffield's competitors were able to capitalise on their performances to bring home a trio of bronze medals.

Trampolinist Bryony Page (BSc Biology 2015) was our first winner, securing a second Olympic medal finish after her silver in Rio, winning a bronze medal behind a strong first and second place for the Chinese competitors.

Alumna Hollie Pearne-Webb, MBE (BA Economics 2013) captained the Team GB Women’s Hockey team to a bronze medal as well. The team faced tough opposition throughout the games but battled through to secure third place in the bronze medal playoff against India.

The third bronze for a Sheffield competitor went to current English Literature student Megan Shackleton, competing at her first Paralympics. Megan and her partner Sue Bailey won their bronze in the Table Tennis class 4-5 team competition.

Outside of the medals, Joy Haizelden (BMedSci Health and Human Sciences 2020) represented Team GB in the wheelchair basketball competition and helped the side to finish a creditable seventh place.

After such an exciting pair of tournaments we are eager to see how our competitors get on in Paris in three years’ time, and to see which other athletes at Sheffield are able to rise through the ranks and compete at the highest level.
