Calculative practices and settlement

This project is part of my PhD studies and will explore the role of valuation within a university setting. Valuation will be used as the theoretical frame to explore how the value of space within the built environment is summonsed, valorised, and settled upon.

Project description

This PhD project is overseen by Professor Adam Leaver (Accounting) and is set within a reputable UK university who are creating a new building. The new building brings innovative ideas around staff working in spaces, and is seen as a significant change for the organisation. The work focuses on group interactions around how space within the new building is understood, valorised and settled upon by different departments who will occupy the space in the future. This brings in the notion of worth and time perspectives from a range of different actors (human and non-human) around space. To explore the group interactions, the sociology of translation will be used within actor-network theory whereby human and non-human actors will be given equal focus. It is understood that the university uses a range of calculative practices that enforce minimum space standards for individuals in the future and this will also form part of the enquiry.
