As a student in the Department of Computer Science you will be part of a diverse global community. The University of Sheffield last year welcomed students from 117 different countries, and our undergraduate and postgraduate courses attract students from around the globe, making the Department a cultural, friendly and vibrant place to study. In addition, around 50% of our academic teaching staff are from overseas, giving our course content international relevance. Our teaching staff are also from a broad range of backgrounds, giving you a diverse perspective on all aspects of computer science and its related disciplines. 

All of our degrees are open to international students, and our international graduates go on to excel in careers of their choice. Employers around the world know that a degree from Sheffield is a mark of quality, with recent graduates going on to work in companies such as Amazon, Google, Ernest and Young, IBM, Hewlett Packard and PWC. We consistently achieve high scores for graduate employment in the Unistats annual survey. The most recent data shows that 100% of our MEng and MComp graduates in particular were in professional or managerial jobs within 6 months of graduation, with an average salary of £27,000.

Our degrees are accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS). Our MEng, MComp and Masters programmes are fully accredited, whilst our BEng and BSc courses are partially accredited. Our student-run software company Genesys Solutions is the first of its kind in the UK. All our students have the chance to join Genesys. You'll be mentored by staff from IBM and work on real projects for external clients, enabling you to gain hands on experience irrespective of whether you are studying at undergraduate or postgraduate level.

As an undergraduate student in the Department, you will benefit from unparalleled investment in our facilities. In September 2015, the Diamond was officially opened. This new £81m building, supported by an additional £20m investment in teaching equipment, is a state-of-the-art engineering teaching facility, designed to offer the best experience possible to our students. As a computer science student you will have access to these outstanding facilities including 3D printing and the Virtual Reality Suite. You will gain hands-on, practical experience, using problem-based learning techniques to deepen your understanding of modular topics. Combined with traditional lecture and tutorial-based teaching delivered by our dedicated academic staff, you’ll graduate with excellent theoretical and practical understanding of your subject – something which will provide an advantage in a competitive job market.

Make your experience count

Well-qualified computer scientists are in high demand, and a Computer Science degree from Sheffield will give you the opportunity to gain experience to make you stand out from the crowd. All our undergraduate degrees are available to study with a Year in Industry. This popular choice lets you gain industrial experience between years three and four – recent students have spent the year at Goldman Sachs, IBM, CERN, Microsoft and Bentley Motors. You’ll have access to the Employability Placement Team, who will help you find a placement as well as the University’s award-winning Careers Service.

With two universities, there is a large student population here, and there are many international students.
