A computer science degree from Sheffield will sharpen your analytical skills, stretch your creative talents, and equip you with the technical ability you need to succeed in a computing career.

You'll have the chance to learn about how computers are used to design programs and to understand cognitive abilities such as language, speech and hearing.

There are chances to work in robotics, computational biology, 3D graphics and virtual reality. We can even teach you how to run your own IT-based business, or how to manage someone else's.

What makes us unique?

Our student-run software company Genesys Solutions is the only one of its kind in the UK. All students studying for one of our MComp degrees have the chance to join Genesys. You'll be mentored by staff from IBM and work on real projects for external clients.

And you can tailor your role to the kind of career you want – whether that's creative, developmental or consultancy. Throughout, you'll develop essential skills in client management, negotiating, project management and problem solving.

Our graduates have gone on to big things through Genesys. Some have started their own businesses; others have found work for leading employers.

We prepare you for the professional world

At Sheffield we believe in giving you hands-on experience in a real professional environment. All our degrees are accredited by the British Computer Society. So by the time you graduate, you're more than ready for the world of work.

Whichever degree you choose, in the first year you'll work on a real-world problem in a small team as part of the Global Engineering Challenge, and from the second year you'll solve real business problems for external clients as part of our Software Hut.

You can boost your career prospects even further by taking a year in industry as part of your degree. A dedicated officer in our department will help you find a placement and they'll be on hand to offer advice and support throughout. You'll be paid a salary and your University fees are reduced for that year.

In the careers market, you'll stand out from the crowd. It's not unusual for our students to be offered well-paid jobs before they graduate.

100 per cent of our students (on a four year course) who are in employment have a graduate-level job within six months of graduating.
