Transmission Hub: Translating More’s Utopia

Speakers: Phil Withington, Tehyun Ma, Cathy Shrank (University of Sheffield)

Translating Thomas More's Utopia

The pretext for this session is the publication of the The Oxford Handbook of Thomas More's Utopia, which was submitted to OUP at the beginning of this year. The Handbook is of especial interest to a panel dedicated to the transmission of ideas because - uniquely - twenty of the thirty nine chapters are concerned with the translation of Utopia into different vernacular languages: they explore the production, contexts, appropriations, and consequences of the translation of this iconic text over 400 years and across four continents.

For this panel Phil Withington will briefly introduce Thomas More's Utopia and outline the structure of the Handbook and some of its recurring themes. He'll then hand over to two chapters from the volume specifically concerned with the translation process: Cathy Shrank will talk about 'Utopia in Sixteenth-Century Italy' and Tehyun Ma will talk about 'The Multiple Lives of Utopia in Modern China'. There should be plenty of time for questions.

All welcome!
