New member of staff - Dr Iwan Evans

Iwan joined the Department of Infection and Immunity as a Thomas-Berry and Simpson Fellow on the 1st October 2013 from the University of Bath (laboratory of Prof. Will Wood). His research is aimed at understanding how macrophage behaviour can be regulated and reprogrammed through contact with apoptotic cells. To study this he uses the fruitfly, Drosophila melanogaster, which enables him combine the powerful genetics of this organism with the ability to follow its macrophages dynamically in vivo at high resolution (by confocal microscopy). Iwan will also be a member of the MRC Centre for Developmental and Biomedical Genetics (where the flies live) and is excited about the possibilities of extending his work into vertebrate systems through collaborations with his new colleagues.
