Steven Reynolds wins British Fertility Society Best Scientist Award 2016

Sarah Calvert and Steven ReynoldsResearch Fellow Dr. Steven Reynolds from the Academic Unit of Radiology (Department of Infection, Immunity & Cardiovascular Disease) won the British Fertility Society Best Scientist Award 2016 at the annual meeting held in Gateshead in January.

Steven is working with Postdoctoral Research Associate Dr. Sarah Calvert on an MRC funded project “Spectroscopic Probes of Energy Regulation & Metabolism (SPERM): Using High Resolution MR spectroscopy to identify biomarkers of male fertility” recently awarded to Professor Allan Pacey (Academic Unit of Reproductive and Developmental Medicine, Department of Oncology and Metabolism) and Professor Martyn Paley (Academic Unit of Radiology, Department of Infection, Immunity & Cardiovascular Disease). He won the prize following a 10 minute oral presentation entitled “Measuring Glycolysis versus Oxidative Phosphorylation in Human Sperm by 13C MR Spectroscopy”.

At the BFS Annual Meeting Sarah also presented a poster entitled “Comparison of metabolites present in sperm from the 80% fraction and the 80-40% interface after density gradient centrifugation of normozoospermic ejaculates” which was well received. Steven and Sarah are pictured in front of the 9.4T Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy scanner on level 4 of the Jessop Wing.
