Outreach

As part of intensive training within ITN-MIMIC our fellows participate in outreach activities in their host institutions.

Through the outreach activities fellows:

  • raise awareness of research funded by the European Union
  • contribute to increase the public understanding of science
  • improve their communication skills to non-specialist staff, school pupils and general public at a very basic level.

Outreach activity IV

As part of the training, MIMIC fellows were encouraged to run an event promoting MIMIC network and research to the public - Outreach activity IV.

Fellows decided to host a fun and informal evening of talks and quizzes in a local pub.

They were supported by an organisation which commonly hosts such events – Pint of Science, which is a British-based international organisation whose main objective is to catalyse the exchange of knowledge and culture between the non-scientific public and scientific researchers.

PoS’s main activity is a science festival held in bars over three evenings in May.

These events have soared in popularity every year since its debut in 2013.

The outreach activity IV was organised as a one-off special Pint of Science (PoS) event entitled “Human on a chip – the future of drug discovery” on 31st July 2019 in the Koetshuis De Burcht in Leiden, The Netherlands.

This event was also special for the whole PoS community in the Netherlands as it was brought to Leiden for the first time ever.

MIMIC fellows confidently solicited the support of PoS in selling tickets on their website (https://www.pintofscience.nl/special-event-humans-on-a-chip) and publicising through different social media channels like MIMIC and Pint of Science NL Twitter and Facebook accounts or Instagram.

The event was also advertised locally through flyers in the bar and in the closest neighbourhood. Around 40 members of the local public attended the event. Most attendants had previously heard of PoS events.

Overall audience was scientific with strong biology background and a few of them had connection with MIMIC fellow as they were working together and either in MIMETAS or Galapagos.
