Languages for All

Languages for All is a university-wide scheme that provides opportunities for all students wishing to develop foreign language skills within or beyond their main degree programme. This could be learning a new language, or else continuing to build on a language started at school or college.

How to get involved

Undergraduate Students

If your degree programme allows, you can take a foreign language module as a choice within the 120 credits of your degree programme. You can register for these modules through either the module enrolment event in September or through your online module choice. You can also find more information on the registration webpages

If you are on a degree programme where there is no unrestricted module choice then you can apply to study an additional module on a not-for-credit basis – potentially for no extra cost using a Languages for All fee-waiver. You must meet all the eligibility criteria (PDF) to qualify for a fee waiver. You can also check your eligibility using our LfA fee waiver eligibility flowchart (PDF).

If you are not eligible for a Languages for All fee waiver then you could still study an additional not-for-credit languages module as a self-funding student for £220 per 10 credit module or £395 for 20 credits.

To register for any Languages for All modules you need to contact the relevant languages department directly. You can also find more information on the registration webpages

Postgraduate Students

Languages for All modules are available to postgraduate students as a module choice where unrestricted credits are available or as an additional not-for–credit module. These would be studied as a self-funding student and cost £220 per 10 credit module or £395 for 20 credits.

Some PGR students can apply to study a languages module as part of the Doctoral Development Programme (DDP). More information is available on the DDP webpages.

Taking a foreign language module could be very useful to you in gaining that competitive edge in an increasingly global labour market. The University of Sheffield encourages its students to enhance their degree through foreign language skills, gaining an international experience, and becoming 'culturally agile'.

The Confederation of British Industry survey report "Gateway to Growth” (2014) stressed that nearly two-thirds of UK businesses competing in an increasingly globalised commercial environment place a high value on language skills. Many employers are seeking graduates who may not necessarily have advanced linguistic skills but who can communicate conversationally in the foreign language as this helps to 'break the ice' with potential business partners.

Most language modules are available from beginners through to advanced levels of learning and you will be able to record your additional languages achievements on the Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR), a record of all your achievements at university.

You can navigate the range of languages available to find the right course for you.

Please note that native speakers are not allowed to enrol on LfA modules.
