Postgraduate research students

Postgraduates on research programmes can study as language as an extra-curricular module using the Doctoral Development Programme or as a self-funded student.

Doctoral Development Programme (DDP)

Languages you study as part of Languages for All will be included in your DDP portfolio. The language/s must be relevant to your doctoral research and/or future career development. Your supervisor must also consent to your taking the module as part of the DDP (we will contact your supervisor, but you should also speak to them before applying).

There is no fee, but minimum attendance and coursework criteria apply.

Requirements:

  • Attend a minimum of 70% of classes and labs
  • Complete all formative assessment (i.e., two pieces of essential homework and an independent study record)

Cancellation Policy

Deadlines:

  • Semester one (Autumn): 5pm, Friday 12th October 2018
  • Semester two (Spring): 5pm, Friday 22nd February 2019

It is not possible to drop the module after these deadlines, unless:

  • Extenuating circumstances apply, which can be evidence AND no more than three teaching weeks were attended

A student who enrols for both Autumn and Spring semesters, completes the Autumn semester, and then decides not to continue in Spring may cancel their Spring module up until the Spring deadline.

A student who wishes to cancel both semesters may cancel their place in Autumn (i.e., there is no need to complete a second cancellation request in Spring).

Self-funded study

The University of Sheffield offers language study as an extra-curricular activity in addition to studies within degree programmes.

Not-for-credit modules will not:

  • Be included in the 120 credits that form your degree.
  • Count towards your overall mark for the year.
  • Affect your ability to graduate.

A cancellation policy applies to not-for-credit modules (see below).

Fees

Courses cost £240 for 1 semester and £420 for 2 semesters, except for Italian accelerated modules which are £420 for 1 semester and £840 for 2 semesters.

Cancellation Policy

Deadlines:

  • Semester one (Autumn): 5pm, Friday 12th October 2018
  • Semester two (Spring): 5pm, Friday 22nd February 2019

Cancellations made before these deadlines will result in a refund of the course fee, minus an administrative charge of £50.00.

Refunds will not be issued after these deadlines, unless:

  • Extenuating circumstances apply, which can be evidenced AND no more than three teaching weeks were attended.

A student who enrols for both Autumn and Spring semesters, completes the Autumn semester, and then decides not to continue in Spring may cancel their Spring module up until the Spring deadline. In these cases, the refund will be equal to the two-semester fee minus the one-semester fee, minus an administrative charge of £50.00.

Spring semester cancellations submitted before 5pm, Friday 25th January 2019 will result in a waiver of the £50.00 administrative fee. In these cases, the refund will be equal to the two-semester fee minus the one-semester fee.

Not-for-credit modules are provided by the Modern Languages Teaching Centre, the School of Languages and Cultures and the School of East Asian Studies. Select the relevant department below to find more information.
