Theme leads
The Centre for Machine Intelligence (CMI) is a University-wide strategic initiative dedicated to the transformation and acceleration of our research, innovation and teaching via artificial intelligence (AI).
Currently, the CMI is in the process of appointing Leads for its four interdisciplinary research themes. The Theme Leads will work across different faculties and institutes and will play a pivotal role in furthering the CMI's mission to foster outstanding interdisciplinary research in and/or on AI at Sheffield and beyond.
- Human-Centric AI - This theme will address challenges in social interaction, using AI for good and conforming to legal and ethical norms.
- AI-Enabled Research - This theme will transform research across all disciplines by providing new methods for understanding a wide range of data (images, sound, sequences, etc.), detecting key or rare events in massive data sets, extracting new insights in scientific and health data.
- Autonomous Systems and Robotics - This theme will enable a new generation of robots and other autonomous systems including bio-inspired solutions and their safe and secure adoption in applications such as healthcare, agriculture and manufacturing.
- AI for Manufacturing - This theme will enable efficient and robust manufacturing processes, novel design and production of chemicals and materials, and accessible AI-driven manufacturing systems.
The following positions are currently open to advert:
Human-Centric AI
Senior Lecturer and Theme Lead in AI and In/Equality
The Centre for Machine Intelligence (CMI) and the Faculty of Social Sciences at The University of Sheffield (TUoS) wish to recruit a Senior Lecturer (Grade 9, equivalent to Associate Professor) in AI and in/equality.
You will work across the CMI and the Faculty of Social Sciences Social Research Institute for the first three years of the post, after which you will join a social science School appropriate to your disciplinary background and expertise.
AI and inequality is an area of widespread current concern, in terms of (a) the practical development and implementation of AI, (b) AI policy decision-making and (c) socially and scientifically, at national and international level. Concern about AI bias and discrimination and a commitment to developing responsible and trustworthy AI underlies much of the current global policy and scholarly debate about AI. AI and in/equality is a topic that urgently needs addressing, and it needs social science expertise in order to do so, given that inequality is a major focus in the social sciences.
You will have a background in the social sciences and experience of interdisciplinary collaboration, especially with STEM disciplines. You will have the skills to provide leadership in AI and in/equality and to work with other theme leads and the Centre Director to ensure that the CMI is at the forefront of AI research, innovation, and impact, nationally and internationally.
