Choosing to study maths was an easy choice for Frederick. At Sheffield, he's been able to explore fascinating topics such as group theory.

What made you want to study your course?

Mathematics has always fascinated me and I also thoroughly enjoy solving mathematical problems, so choosing to study mathematics was an easy choice for me. The option of being able to choose a masters was a real bonus as I had always wanted to study to that level.

What made you decide to study at the University of Sheffield?

The University of Sheffield has a fantastic reputation for studying mathematics and because I already live in Sheffield it was a natural choice to apply. Sheffield as a city is great, it combines the benefits of a thriving city whilst also being so close to the countryside, as well as being central for most other locations in the UK.

What have you enjoyed most about your course so far?

I particularly enjoy the pure mathematics side of the course. The most interesting thing that I have learnt, in my opinion, is group theory. It is a very broad subject that can be used to describe and explain the structure of many different objects in mathematics.

What skills have you developed during your course?

I have developed not only a deeper understanding of mathematics, but also the skills required to write and structure mathematical arguments, which I find to be particularly useful and interesting. I have also learnt great team working skills, as there are a number of group projects that require working together to achieve the objective.

What would you say to a student thinking about studying your course at Sheffield?

If you have a passion for mathematics, you should definitely consider this course. The University itself has great facilities and the staff are very friendly. The Peak District is also close by, which is a great place to walk or cycle any time of the year.

What are you planning to do after your degree?

I am considering doing a PhD in mathematics.
