University of Sheffield Concert Series

The Department of Music is closely linked with the University of Sheffield Concert Series. The Concert Series is a vibrant platform that gives our students frequent opportunities to perform within a professional setting, and creates opportunities for masterclasses and ensemble collaborations to be showcased to the local community.

In a 'normal' academic year, The Concert Series opens its doors to the public for a diverse and dynamic programme of events.  This includes world music performances by international touring musicians, interactive learning opportunities, and electro-acoustic experiences.

Although only a handful of in-person concerts were able to take place, audiences had the opportunity to discover electrifying performances in a new virtual environment. One highlight of the 2020 Sound Laboratory: Contemporary Season, was the immersive online headphone concert. This featured premieres of original compositions from members of our staff and student body.

The annual Sound Junction weekend was also adapted into an engaging online experience. Sound Junction is presented in association with the University of Sheffield Sound Studios and is one of the UK’s longest-running concert series dedicated exclusively to acousmatic, electroacoustic music. This is led by Professor Adrian Moore and Dr Adam Stanovic. Both teach on the Composition aspects of programmes in the department.

Spring 2021: A Season of Streams

The beguiling and comprehensive mix of music across the next few months includes folk musician Fay Hield, the incredible Manchester Camerata, violinist Rakhi Singh, contemporary pianist Rolf Hind, as well as student performances and much more.
