This event features a conversation with Emi Yagi, Japanese author of Diary of a Void (Penguin Random House, 2022), which won the Osamu Dazai Prize, awarded annually to the best debut work of fiction in Japan. The novel was immediately translated into English by Lucy North and David Boyd, and was highly celebrated with its humorous narrative of a single working woman.

Dr Nozomi Uematsu, Lecturer in Japanese Literature in the School of East Asian Studies at the University of Sheffield, will have a conversation with the author, along with discussion of the recent burgeoning of contemporary Japanese women’s writing in English translation. The event will be held both in Japanese and English, followed by a Q&A from the audience.
