Profile

Director of HEDM email: scharr-hedm-director@sheffield.ac.uk

I joined ScHARR in 2014 as a Health Economist Research Associate for HEDS, working as part of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) funded Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care for Yorkshire and Humber (CLAHRC YH). Since the end of the CLAHRC in 2019, I now work alongside the NIHR funded Applied Research Collaboration for Yorkshire and Humber (ARC YH).

As of January 2017, I have been promoted to the position of Research Fellow. As of July 2018, I am the current Director of the MSc Health Economics and Decision Modelling (HEDM) course. As of January 2020, I have been promoted to the position of Senior Research Fellow and I am the current HEDS section lead for Knowledge Exchange (KE).

I completed my BA in Economics and MSc in Economics and Health Economics at the University of Sheffield in 2007 and 2008, respectively. I then moved to the University of Nottingham in 2008, working as a Health Economist Research Associate, as well as starting my PhD in Health Economics in 2010.

I completed and passed my Viva for my PhD thesis, titled "The role of utility, health, and capabilities in economic evaluation: a case study in frail older people", as of December 2014.

During my time as a health economist I have provided health economic support for at least seven completed Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs), as well as a number of cohort, pilot and feasibility studies.

Although I specialise in the use of routinely collected healthcare data and outcome measures for the purpose of economic evaluations alongside clinical trials, I also have an interest in: (1) the psychometric assessment and statistical analysis of health, well-being and capability-based measures; and (2) the use of routinely collected healthcare resource-use information from large observational datasets or directly from the health or social care service for the purpose of economic analyses, developing economic models, and costing exercises.

Research interests
  • Trial-based economic evaluation and outcome measurement
  • Cost-effectiveness analysis and Markov modelling methodology
  • Use of routinely collected care data for trial-based economic analyses and economic modelling
  • Application of economic evaluation and costing methods specific to the decision-maker and problem
  • Statistical methods for the psychometric assessment of preference-based measures
  • The capability approach to quality of life measurement and valuation
