The Faculty of Social Sciences hub building and Northumberland Road Estates Strategy will co-locate many of our departments to promote Interdisciplinary Excellence in Research, Learning and Teaching and leading the way in addressing important societal challenges.
The School of Journalism, Media and Communication, Information School, School of Education, Sheffield Methods Institute, White Rose Doctoral Training Partnership, and Sociological Studies alongside the Faculty of Social Sciences office will be moving to the new hub. The building will also house our Interdisciplinary Social Research Institutes.
Greenspace, which will be open to the public as well as students and staff, will be part of the development, providing an improved local environment. With four storeys at the front and three at the back, the building's glass and steel frame will allow for lots of natural light and has been designed with sustainability at its core.
Watch the flythrough video to see a bird's eye view of the exterior and some of the different spaces inside the building, including the light and airy atrium with light-flooding glass roof, new lecture theatres, open learning areas, cafe, and new state of the art specialist studios and journalism newsrooms.
The building is due to open in Spring 2023. Over the next few months we’ll be sharing more on how the building is beginning to take shape and explaining some of its key sustainability features. These include the BREEAM Outstanding Building Accreditation standards we're working to; the first use in education of ERDA ground source heat pumps; our efforts to ensure the building is zero carbon once opened; the new planting and green spaces which will improve local biodiversity; and the support of sustainable travel with cycle hub provision.
