Regional events
In 2023, the network hosted a number of regional events in the UK and South Korea bringing researchers together to foster collaboration.
Sociolinguists of Korean language research multiple topics and cut across different interests. The network was able to sponsor regional meet-up events in 2023 to foster these research-led groups. Read below to find out more.
Linguistic anthropology meet-up in Seoul
Korean Studies students and staff from the University of Sheffield met with graduate students and professors in linguistic anthropology from Seoul National University and other universities in August 2023 in Seoul. The event offered UK students a chance to meet early stage researchers. Likewise, the researchers there discussed challenges in the field of linguistic anthropology, whilst also discussing plans to collaborate on a Korea-led grant and a special issue in the journal Signs and Society that is based at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies.
Korean Language Educators meet-up in Leeds & Oxford
Cuie Xu from the University of Leeds organised two events for researchers who are also involved in Korean language education. The British Association of Korean Language Education (BAKLE) held two events, one in Leeds and one in Oxford, to build a cross-country network of Korean language instructors who are also active in research. The members of BAKLE also discussed ways to collaborate on research publications and the publication of a Korean language textbook that draws on sociolinguistic expertise.
Applied linguistics and sociolinguistics meet-up in Edinburgh
Hana Jee organised an event with applied linguists and sociolinguists of Korean who are based in Edinburgh. The University of Edinburgh is a growing site for the study of and research on Korean and there are a number of PhD students and early career researchers who focus on sociolinguistic methods and topics.
Sociolinguists of Korean workplaces meet-up in York
Mike Prentice (Sheffield), Kook-hee Gil (Sheffield), and Kyoungmi Kim (York St. John) met up in the city of York to discuss the state of research on Korean workplaces. Kyoungmi and Mike discussed the possibility of collaborating on a workplace ethnography of a Korean-firm in the UK with an attention to language use and inter-cultural communication issues.
