Professor H Peter Jost CBE

The iT-CDT would like to send their condolences to the family and friends of Professor H Peter Jost. He will be sorely missed.

Professor H Peter Jost

We will be celebrating his enormous contribution to the field of tribology throughout this year's Leeds-Lyon Symposium on Tribology.

"It is with deep regret that I must report the recent death of the Charity's Chairman, Professor H Peter Jost CBE. He died peacefully on 7 June 2016 at the age of 95 years after a short battle with illness.

Professor Jost was generally regarded as the Founding Father of tribology. He was trained as an engineer and in 1966 published the Jost Report which became acclaimed worldwide and changed the way industry and science approach the question of friction and wear. He has dedicated his life work to advise governments, industry and science on the cost saving benefits of the application of tribology.

He was until his death President of the International Tribology Council and a Life Member of Council of the Parliamentary & Scientific Committee at Westminster and also an Honorary Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and of the Institute of Materials. Previously he was Director and Chairman of both public and private companies operating in the engineering and technological sectors.

In addition to his appointment as a Commander of the British Empire, he also received state honours from the Heads of State of France, Germany, Poland and Austria. In 2011 the Order of the Rising Sun was conferred upon him by the Emperor of Japan. He held two honorary professorships and eleven honorary doctorates including, in January 2000, the first Millennium honorary science doctorate. He has received professional awards and honours in 15 countries.

He leaves a wife, two daughters and three grandchildren".
