Local area
Students make up about 10% of Sheffield’s population, so as you can imagine local businesses are ready to welcome you – and cater for most budgets. In fact, the city is often voted one of the UK’s most affordable for students.
Kelham Island
Home to the popular Peddler open-air food market, Cutlery Works food hall and arcade/bar/church Temple of Fun, Kelham is one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world (according to Time Out). The thousands who turn up every week seem to agree.
Weston Park
Duck pond, historic buildings and sculptures: the quintessential English park.
Devonshire Green
Take a blanket and sit out on a warm day, watch all Sheffield life come together in this city-centre greenspace, and then head down Division Street for an alternative corner of the city.
Crookes Valley Park
About five minutes walk from the SU is the beautiful Crookes Valley Park. When the sun’s out, this place is full of BBQs, sunbathers and music
Travel and the City
Though it’s big, Sheffield is pretty easy to get around. You can walk across the city centre, from the train station to our campus, in about 20 minutes. If you fancy going a little further afield you can make use of our fantastic transport links to other major cities, and of course it’s just a short journey to the wilds of the Peak District National Park.
By foot
Sheffield is a walkable city, and living in the centre puts you a short walk from all university facilities and departments… so, in theory, you should never be late for a lecture.
By bike
Secure cycle storage available across the site and dedicated cycle paths and routes criss-cross the city, so commuting and exploring on two wheels is a pleasure.
By bus and tram
Single bus tickets for students are just £1.20, and the Supertram network will take you pretty much wherever you want to go in the city, and in Rotherham too.
By train
Sheffield central train station connects you to anywhere in the region and beyond – meaning you’re only around two hours from London, for example.
By car
Permits are available for the long-stay car parks nearby, though travelling around the city is easier by two wheels. Disabled parking is provided around the campus and the university residences.
