In our peer group of 62 UK institutions specialising in multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary engineering, we were judged to be:
1st for quality of research publications
ACSE is ranked first in terms of quality of its research publications, ahead of Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial College, University College London and Kings College, to name just a few of our top competitors. Overall 98.5% of our publications were assessed as either world leading or internationally excellent in terms of their originality, significance and rigour.
3rd for overall research quality
Taking into account our research environment and the ability for our research to make a difference to society and the economy, we are ranked ahead of all but Oxford and Cambridge. Overall, 96% of our research was assessed as world-leading or internationally excellent.
Amongst the very best research at the University of Sheffield
Our score for overall research quality is the highest in the Faculty of Engineering and joint second across all the departments in the University.
The REF assesses the impact of research beyond academia, as well as assessing the academic excellence of research. One purpose of the REF is to reward research departments in universities that engage with business, the public sector and civil society organisations, and carry new ideas through to beneficial outcomes.
ACSE’s strategy has been to develop technology platforms which deliver tangible benefits to new and existing users within aerospace and transport, life sciences and health, energy and environment, and manufacturing and robotics. We have developed new processes to improve the competitiveness of UK aerospace industries, and our research has informed alcohol policy in the UK and internationally.
These truly remarkable results, which place us firmly at the forefront of engineering research in the UK, reflect the passion, dedication, inspiration and effort of our truly outstanding academics, researchers, technical & support staff and students.
