Alumni return to enhance their careers with an Executive MBA

Current learners share what the Sheffield University Executive MBA means to them

The Management School's Executive Education building

Despite the job market difficulties posed by the pandemic, Executive MBA graduates have significant career advantages. At Sheffield Management School, Executive MBA participants hold down full-time jobs while studying over two years. This offers learners a considerable opportunity to develop the skills to either advance in their current roles or pursue a career change, according to Dr Mel Bull, Director of Executive and Professional Education.

Our EMBA cohorts are in a unique position to reflect on what they have achieved in their careers and decide the next steps in their professional journey. Of course, we are here to support individual development through our world-class teaching and research and supportive culture to give professional learners the skills to transform their careers.”

For one participant, Stuart Joce, CEO Bentley Hall Ltd, who graduated from Sheffield with a BA in Economics in 1994, the decision to return to his alma mater for his EMBA was easy.

I never considered looking anywhere else. I realised that the University of Sheffield still meant as much to me as it did in 1991. Sheffield gave me the best start possible in my adult life and it was the obvious place to go back to for the next stage of my life”.

Having successfully headed up a number of tech start ups and worked on a number of turnaround projects, Stuart says that for him undertaking the EMBA is all about his personal development.

“I am reinvigorating my ability to learn after many years of perhaps thinking that ‘I know’”.

The Management School’s independent Triple Crown Accreditation marks it as an exceptional place to explore, learn, and  develop insights from leading experts to advance career goals, deliver real value, and strategic leadership for organisations.

Diana Staicu, Project Manager for Knight Frank, graduated from the Management School in 2018 with a degree in Business Management and Economics and returned to pursue her EMBA in 2020. Diana says it is the diligence of the School’s staff that brought her back and added that the diversity of the cohort is an added bonus.

“An EMBA programme provides a more diverse and wider field for graduates to expand their horizons. This is why the course is ideal for networking.”

As an aspiring leader, Diana flags how much the programme has enhanced her knowledge of business operations and developed her managerial skills particularly around team motivation, performance and wellbeing. She is already applying principles from her modules to her role as project manager.

What I have learned during my EMBA has had an immediate and direct application as part of my current role’s responsibilities and eliminates the need for additional external training.”

Underscoring the benefits of an EMBA, Stuart Sinclair, who completed his MSc (Eng) at Sheffield in 2014 and is now Managing Director of HSF Services, highlighted how the practical nature of the programme is already paying dividends for his business.

Each module can be applied in the workplace straight away. The EMBA has given me a toolkit to be the best leader that I can be.”

Managing Director of HSF Services

Along with enhancing theoretical knowledge, Stuart adds that the importance of developing soft skills to bolster decision-making should not be overlooked.

“Working alongside others from different sectors and roles has helped to expand my knowledge and led to insightful discussion and debate. I can now view things through many different lenses and perspectives.”
