For nearly two decades, this extravaganza has become a much loved fixture in Sheffield's cultural calendar, drawing over 10,000 visitors each year.
A diverse range of attractions awaits at the Weston Park May Fayre, from street performers and circus entertainers to live music and interactive family activities. The event also features exhibitors, food and drink vendors, artisan crafts, and a children’s fun fair, promising a fun day for all.
A Partnership Rooted in History:
The May Fayre story began in 2005, emerging from the University's centenary celebrations. Sheffield City Council parks service, recognising the University's resources, particularly the renowned National Fairground and Circus Archive, approached Professor Vanessa Toulmin, Director of City Culture and Public Engagement at the university to collaborate on enriching the city's parks and events.
“Our nearly twenty-year collaboration with Sheffield City Council on the May Fayre has consistently transformed Weston Park into a vibrant hub of live, free entertainment. The longevity of this beloved event demonstrates our unwavering commitment to Sheffield, and together with our regional partners, we are proud to cultivate a richer cultural experience for the entire South Yorkshire community.”
Professor Vanessa Toulmin
Director of City, Culture and Public Engagement.
Housed within the University of Sheffield Library since 1994, the Archive hosts a remarkable collection that documents the captivating world of traveling show-people and their entertainments from the 17th century to the present day. At the time the collaboration began, the Archive was under the direction of Professor Toulmin.
Building on this relationship, the University's events team worked closely with the Council events team to develop and nurture the May Fayre into the spectacular event it is today. Starting with initial exhibitions, the Fayre developed to include captivating street theatre, intriguing sideshows, and thrilling circus entertainment, much of which is now provided by artists that perform at Glastonbury Festival!
Our 'Thank You' to Sheffield:
Delivered in close collaboration with Sheffield City Council, the May Fayre represents the University's heartfelt 'thank you' to the city. It proudly highlights our civic role and our commitment to supporting our neighbouring communities, museums, parks, the surrounding hospitals, and the Council.
The May Fayre's spirit of entertainment also previously extended to Sheffield Children’s Hospital, with some of the performers visiting the wards and bringing much-needed joy to young patients. The event has also supported the NHS by hosting stalls that encourage public engagement with vital clinical trials.
Continuing a City Tradition:
The May Fayre proudly continues Sheffield's deep connection and tradition of welcoming fairgrounds and circuses. The 19th century witnessed the flourishing of traveling entertainment, with open spaces and parks across the city hosting thrilling rides, exotic animals, and dazzling performances. Sheffield even welcomed famous figures like Pablo Fanque, Britain's first Black circus owner, who graced venues at Castlegate, The Wicker and Ponds Forge area.
Today, the May Fayre keeps this vibrant spirit alive, bringing people together for a day of shared joy and celebration in the heart of our city.
