Your course - a challenge worth taking

All our courses give you a strong grounding in the main areas of civil engineering: structures, water, geotechnics and environmental issues. We'll also teach you how to think about problems from a sustainable, holistic point of view, to inspire and prepare you for the complex environmental and social challenges we face.

Options for Engineering with Architecture

We're proud of our unique, multi-disciplinary and innovative courses that span the disciplines of engineering and architecture, providing students with the skills to design and engineer buildings.

The two degree programmes provide you with the skills to work in teams to produce great architecture. However, they differ in the roles they will train you for.

Architectural Engineering covers all the engineering disciplines associated with buildings and their infrastructure, alongside an appreciation of architecture. The combination of these skills will enable you develop a career engineering high quality buildings so they have a minimal impact on the environment. This course has been honoured by the Royal Academy of Engineering who awarded us the title of "Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Building Design".

Structural Engineering and Architecture focuses particularly on integrating these two disciplines making you capable of appreciating competing considerations, while able to balance the professional opinion of both disciplines. This allows you to follow a career as either a structural engineer or an architect.

We're proud of our strong links with industry. The experience and expertise of leading consultants, contractors and specialist engineers feed directly into your degree. If you choose the option of a Year in Industry, you'll spend a year working in a civil or structural engineering company. You'll also be supported by The Faculty of Engineering’s Year in Industry Team.

You'll have the opportunity to study a language alongside technical civil engineering subjects. There's a shortage in the UK construction industry of linguists who are also numerate. Upon graduating you'll join a small engineering elite who have a technical fluency in at least two major international languages, giving you wide-ranging employment opportunities throughout the EU and the rest of the world.

Professional Accreditation

Our MEng courses are accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators, which includes the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation and the Institute of Highway Engineers under licence from the Engineering Council. They are accredited as fully satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng).

Our BEng (Hons) degree is accredited as fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng), and partially satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng). A programme of accredited Further Learning will be required to complete the educational base for CEng.

See www.jbm.org.uk for further information.

MEng Architectural Engineering

The course is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators, which includes the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation and the Institute of Highway Engineers under licence from the Engineering Council. This degree is accredited as fully satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng). See www.jbm.org.uk for further information. The course is also accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the and the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers

Please note, Architectural Engineering Design HK2D is primarily an engineering course and does not lead to qualification as an Architect.

MEng Structural Engineering and Architecture

This course is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators, which includes the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation and the Institute of Highway Engineers under licence from the Engineering Council. This degree is accredited as fully satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng). See www.jbm.org.uk for further information.

Accreditation by the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Institutions of Civil and Structural Engineers means the course provides sufficient Architecture content to meet the Part I requirements for becoming a Registered Architect and also the MEng requirements to progress to Chartered Engineer without further educational qualifications.
