Overview

Biography

I joined the University of Sheffield in 2007, having completed the first part of my specialist training in paediatric dentistry in Edinburgh. I completed my NHS clinical training in 2009 and was awarded a 3-year full-time NIHR Doctoral Research Fellowship to support my PhD which I completed in 2015. I am currently a Senior Lecturer/Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry and the Trent Regional Cleft Lead for Paediatric Dentistry.

Interests

My research interests include the development of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) using child-centred methods and validation of PROMs using a variety of techniques including Rasch analysis. Clinically, my particular interests are the care of children with cleft lip and palate and the provision of intravenous sedation for dentally anxious patients.

Research

My PhD investigated the impact of dental caries in children using qualitative techniques and developed and validated a caries-specific measure of oral health-related quality of life measure for children (CARIES-QC). CARIES-QC is designed to be used in longitudinal evaluation of interventions for dental caries and is available in English and Dutch. Please click here to find out more about CARIES-QC.

Teaching

My teaching activities include clinical teaching, delivery of lectures and seminars, supervision of elective projects and setting and marking assessments for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. My particular interests involve:

  • Production of procedural videos to enhance clinical skills teaching

  • Development of online interactive tutorials

Clinical

I completed my NHS consultant training in Paediatric Dentistry in October 2009. I am Trent Regional Cleft Network Paediatric Dentistry Lead, a role which aims to ensure these children have access to dental care and involves collating national oral health audit data throughout the Trent region. Through liaison with other members of the team, training opportunities have been developed for trainees in Paediatric Dentistry allowing them to experience the range of specialties involved in cleft lip and palate care. I am currently leading a pilot intravenous sedation service for dentally anxious young people.
