The human mouth is highly innervated, underpinning many vital functions including speech and facial communication. Unwanted stimulation of sensory nerves leads to pain, whereas injury may cause loss of sensation.

Our combined clinical and non-clinical research team at the School leads programmes directed at both improved pain relief and nerve injury repair, with the latter linked to our status as a major centre for regenerative surgery and wider involvement at the Sheffield Neuroscience Institute.
