Accessing support out of hours
Where to seek help if the University Health Service is closed and your problem can’t wait.
Emergencies
Call 999 in a medical emergency.
This is when someone is seriously ill or injured and/or their life is at risk. You can also go to A&E (emergency department).
Medical emergencies can include:
- loss of consciousness
- an acute confused state
- fits that are not stopping
- chest pain
- breathing difficulties
- severe bleeding that cannot be stopped
- severe allergic reactions
- severe burns or scalds
NHS 111
Call 111 if you urgently need medical help or advice but it's not a life-threatening situation.
You can also call NHS 111 if you're not sure which NHS service you need, or seek advice via NHS 111 online.
Minor Injuries Unit
Open 8am to 8pm. No appointment is necessary.
The Minor Injuries Unit provides treatment for adults (over 16) for non-life-threatening injuries.
Minor Injuries Units can treat:
- sprains and strains
- broken bones
- wounds, lacerations and grazes
- wound infections
- minor burns and scalds
- minor head injuries
- insect and animal bites
- minor eye injuries and conditions after 4.30pm weekdays and weekends
Minor Injuries Units cannot treat:
- chest pain
- breathing difficulties
- major injuries
- problems usually dealt with by a GP
- stomach pains
- gynaecological problems
- pregnancy problems
- overdoses
- alcohol related problems
- mental health problems
- conditions likely to require hospital admission

Sheffield City NHS Walk-in service
Open 8am to 10pm. No appointment is necessary.
It is a nurse-led NHS Walk-In Centre and can help when you need advice and treatment for most common illnesses that are urgent but not life-threatening.
They can help with:
- coughs and colds
- chest infections
- wound infections
- sore throats
- headaches
- urine infections
- eye infections
- rashes
- bites and stings
- sudden worsening of long-term conditions
They cannot help with:
- injuries that may require an x-ray
- long-standing medical conditions that are managed by your GP
- sick / fit note requests
- referrals or scans
- dental problems - they can only provide pain relief and not antibiotics
- repeat prescriptions - short supply, only two days of certain medication

Out-of-hours medicines
If you run out of medicine when UHS is closed and need some urgently there are a few ways to get an emergency supply.
