Areas of research

World-leading clinical and non-clinical academic staff supervise clinical academic trainees in diverse areas. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Coronary and cardiovascular imaging (MRI, angiography) and the use of mathematical modelling to extract important data from clinical imaging (Prof Julian Gunn, Dr Paul Morris, Prof Jim Wild, Prof Andy Swift, Dr Becky Gosling)

  • Therapeutic strategies in the management and prevention of atherothrombotic events (Prof Rob Storey, Dr Wiliam Parker)

  • Understanding the inflammatory basis and the effect of immune-aging onof cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis (Prof Sheila Francis, Dr Heather Wilson, Prof. Endre Kiss-Toth)

  • How mechanical stretch and blood flow activate mechanoreceptors and influence cell biology and physiology in relation to atherosclerosis development and aneurysm formation (Dr Jovana Serbanovic-Canic)

  • Discovery of how cardiovascular disease predisposes to dementia and neurodegeneration (Prof Sheila Francis, Dr Osman Shabir and colleagues in the School of Psychology and Neuroscience Institute)

  • Understanding how extracellular vesicles contribute to atherosclerosis, dementia, atherothrombosis and vascular inflammation (Dr Vikki Ridger)

  • Clinical and mechanistic studies of pulmonary arterial hypertension (Prof David Kiely, Prof Robin Condliffe, Prof Alex Rothman, Dr Roger Thompson)

  • Digital health solutions for improvements in health care and early diagnosis of cardiovascular disease (Prof Tim Chico)

  • Improvements in the management of heart failure (Prof Abdallah Al-Mohammad, Prof Alex Rothman, Dr Jen Middleton)

  • Refining the management of patients requiring transcutaneous aortic valve replacement (Dr Javaid Iqbal, Dr Mohammed Aetesam-ur-Rahman, Dr Amir Aziz)

  • Improving management of cardiac arrhythmias (Dr Justin Lee, Dr Nigel Lewis, Dr Jonathan Sahu, Dr Dominic Rogers)

  • Diagnosis and management of inherited cardiac conditions (Prof Nigel Wheeldon, Dr Nigel Lewis)

Facilities

We have an established NIHR Biomedical Research Centre including a Cardiovascular Disease theme, and NIHR Clinical Research Facility, as well as high-quality laboratories and imaging facilities at the Royal Hallamshire and Northern General Hospitals.
