Professor Ashley Blom
Vice-President

Professor Ashley Blom joined the University in 2022 from the University of Bristol where he was Head of the Medical School. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, an NIHR Senior Investigator and past-President of the European Orthopaedic Research Society.

Faculty Director of Operations 

Dr Harris is responsible for the leadership, management, development and delivery of professional services across the Faculty. He works to provide the technical and operational infrastructure required to support the academic business of the Faculty and its departments in line with both faculty and institutional strategies.

Professor Chris Newman

Professor Newman joined the University in 1995 following an MRC Clinician Scientist Fellowship spent at the National Institute for Medical Research and Royal Postgraduate Medical School (1989-1992) and University of Cambridge (1992-1995).

He was appointed as Director of the Clinical Research Facility in 2004, a joint initiative between the University and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The NIHR Sheffield CRF has units both at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and Northern General Hospital.

Professor Tracey Moore

Tracey works closely with the Faculty Directors and the Vice-President and Head of Faculty to ensure that strategy and delivery align with the likely future demands of partners across health and social care, and of the NHS in particular. Tracey has specific responsibility for working with Health Education England, Public Health England, NHS England, Local Authorities and education partners to ensure that commissioned education and training meets all standards required by commissioners, service delivery organisations and professional bodies. Education, training and development of the current workforce is supported in addition to pre-registration training in nursing, orthoptics, speech and language therapy, psychology, medicine, dentistry, dental nursing, hygiene and therapy.

Tracey also has an internal engagement role to work with all faculties and departments across the University so that the considerable teaching and research expertise that the University can offer is fully utilised within health and social care. 

Particular areas of strength for the University include:

Specific training developments to deliver care to patients with complex needs across health and social care through skill sharing and awareness-raising, including care of the deteriorating patient and managing patients with low vision; The development of new roles, eg physicians associates, advanced clinical practitioners, assistant/associate practitioner support workers, advanced apprenticeships; Utilising patients/clients as educators, ie a large number (750+) of service users participate in delivering and assessing training as well as in interviews and selection processes;

Tracey links with numerous networks and organisations in order to help ensure that the University is responsive to current and future workforce requirements, developing accessible delivery so that teams are enabled to meet the needs of patients and clients across a range of settings.

  • Multi-disciplinary and flexible working in primary and community care, including return to practice nursing, preparation for practice nursing, end-of-life care, dementia care, multi-professional dental team development, training education colleagues re. speech and language difficulties;
  • Public health - with extensive training, research and practical applications through analysis in ScHARR (School of Health and Related Research), the co-development of assistive technologies and consideration of `patient activation’ techniques across the health and care workforce;
  • Technology-enhanced learning, ‘human factors’, medical ethics and social accountability in the context of all professional, clinical skills and leadership training;
  • Children and young people, including safeguarding and vaccination training;
  • Stroke and other neurological conditions, utilising cutting-edge translational research;
  • Combined physical and mental health assessment through skill-sharing across roles and professions;
  • Genomic medicine from expert practitioner to an understanding sufficient to advise patients and clients on relative risks and implications.
Faculty Director of Learning and Teaching 

Dr Vanessa Halliday

Vanessa is responsible for overseeing quality assurance and enhancement for all courses, student progress and fitness to practise arrangements.  She is a member of the Faculty Executive Board and represents the faculty at University-level committees.

Vanessa is responsible for establishing robust faculty quality assurance mechanisms, developing quality and enhancement and for developing a Learning and Teaching Strategy for the Faculty.  Vanessa is Chair of the Faculty Learning and Teaching Committee and liaises closely with teaching leads in each school and department in the Faculty.

Faculty Director of Research and Innovation

Professor Paul Hatton

Paul is responsible for developing the research, innovation and knowledge exchange strategy for the Faculty. He develops and promotes appropriate research policies for all activities, working with counterparts in other faculties and research leads within departments, to actively promote inter-departmental strategies and interdisciplinary research.

Paul provides leadership in research and supports the development of management information, key performance indicators and benchmarks to evaluate and increase research performance.

Crucial to the role, Paul promotes the faculty externally, making the most of external networks, especially with regard to NHS R&D colleagues and NHS funding opportunities.

Head of Finance (Faculty of Health)

Rachel Hammond

Rachel is responsible for financial planning, forecasting, budget monitoring and control and advises on and monitors faculty financial performance. She works closely with Departments and Schools to support forward planning and to advise on the financial impact of proposals and decisions.

Rachel heads up the Faculty Finance Team who are responsible for Departmental core and external activities financial performance monitoring, post-award research and procure-to-pay activities

Rachel provides monthly reports to the Faculty Executive Board and advises the board on the financial impact and sustainability of decisions. Additionally, she communicates and implements financial policies and promotes financial awareness across the Faculty, acting as a source of expertise for all financial matters.

Professor Sheila Francis

Sheila is responsible for fostering an environment where all staff and students can succeed and flourish, and feel they belong. She is committed to creating a respectful and positive workplace culture that supports and empowers the well-being of all within the Faculty. Developing new leaders, supporting the development of all to their full potential and building a truly collaborative culture between Departments, Schools and the wider University is a vital part of her work. A crucial aspect of this is to recognise, respect and value the abilities, backgrounds, beliefs and ways of living of all student and staff members of the Faculty.

Sheila also provides leadership of two further strands of work, Sustainability and Philanthropy. These are growth areas and they provide an opportunity for absolutely everyone in the Faculty to get involved to build up our community for the future.
