I love the greenery and the atmosphere here
Sheffield is a perfect combination between a busy city and a quiet one. I love the greenery it has to offer and the fact that I felt at home here straight away. The University has plenty of activities to offer as well, and the Students' Union is by far the greatest - the best in the UK for 10 years in a row!
I feel like being at University gives you a taste of the real world and how life as an adult would be. You have a responsibility towards the University, you have to manage your expenses, feed yourself, and clean. Sheffield is very affordable compared to other cities in the UK. Coming from Egypt, I can definitely say that living here is cheaper than being back home. I like how I am changing and living here has been a blast.
I was planning on studying medicine at first, until I had a conversation with one of my friends’ sisters who happened to study Genetics. She told me all about her course and how she does research on diseases and drugs. The more I looked into it, the more I realised that I wanted to study this more than medicine. I wanted to make a difference in the world and my course seemed like the place to start.
The department is by far the friendliest environment I have been in. Staff members are helpful and welcoming and everyone is always making sure that you fit in. Working in the labs is the best part of my course. I enjoy studying my subject and I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life doing this. We are always being given the opportunity to interact with companies and researchers to find out what kind of field we would like to work in best. Moreover, our whole course is hands on and we get to carry out research ourselves. It prepares you to be a better researcher.
What would I say to a student considering studying at the University of Sheffield? I would say that I have discovered myself the most while being here. I would say that Sheffield offers it all and that all you have to do is come and see for yourselves. Being in Sheffield is a decision you will never regret!
