Peter
Peter is an HR Adviser within the Professional Services HR Business Partnering team. He joined the University in 2015.
What first attracted you to join the University of Sheffield?
I initially arrived as an agency worker on a short term contract and almost immediately realised that the HR Department was a progressive, creative and pleasant place to work. Although I was having to travel over 50 miles per day it was worth it. Also, the chance to be a part of one of the most respected organisations in Yorkshire was too good to miss.
What do you enjoy most about working at the University of Sheffield?
My colleagues first and foremost, the chance to work with a varied level of management, the benefits provided to staff, the fact that I feel as if I am appreciated and finally, after a number of years working in the private sector, the opportunity to be developed.
What do you enjoy about working in the department?
The fact that I am able to work in an office for one, I am not built for working from home on a regular basis. There is a culture of creativity and caring within the department and finally, I feel that we are well led!
Do you have any favourite memories from working at the University of Sheffield?
I would say the feeling that I got when I left the office during my first festive break and I knew I did not have to return to work for a full two weeks! Trust me, that feeling is priceless.
Did you move to Sheffield from another area?
No, I commute into the office for 3 days (sometimes more).
What’s your favourite thing about Sheffield as a city?
It's in Yorkshire, and it's full of Yorkshire people being as friendly and as welcoming as they always are. And it's so vibrant and cosmopolitan.
What would you say to someone who was considering the University as a place to work?
Easy, don't dilly dally and apply...what could beat being part of a great organisation in a great city and in a lovely county. And, finally, not everything has a price, so if you would like to be somewhere that can take you to the wonderful Peak District countryside in 20 minutes whilst at the same time give you more theatres and pubs that you can shake a stick at, Sheffield is the place...
