  • Count towards your overall end-of-year result.
  • Affect your ability to progress to the next year of your degree/graduate.

There is no fee, but minimum attendance and coursework criteria apply.

University of Sheffield students who receive a fee waiver under the Languages for All scheme must:

  • Complete all formative assessment (i.e., two pieces of essential homework and an independent study record)

Cancellation policy

The cancellation policy depends on the enrolment option, as explained below.

Cancellations must be submitted via our cancellation form. Please note we are unable to process cancellations via email. Anyone wishing to cancel a Chinese, Japanese or Korean language module please contact seas@sheffield.ac.uk.

Policy A - For students taking language modules for credits or with a fee waiver

Deadlines:

  • Semester one (Autumn): 5pm, Friday 07 October 2022
  • Semester two (Spring): 5pm, Friday 17 February 2023

It is not possible to drop the module after these deadlines, unless:

  • Extenuating circumstances apply, which can be evidenced
  • AND no more than three teaching weeks were attended

A student who enrols for both Autumn and Spring semesters, completes the Autumn semester, and then decides not to continue in Spring may cancel their Spring module up until the Spring deadline.

A student who wishes to cancel both semesters may cancel their place in Autumn (i.e., there is no need to complete a second cancellation request in Spring).

Policy B - For students who pay a course fee

Deadlines:

  • Semester one (Autumn): 5pm, Friday 07 October 2022
  • Semester two (Spring): 5pm, Friday 17 February 2023

Cancellations made before these deadlines will result in a refund of the course fee, minus an administrative charge of £50.00.

Please note that the cancellation fee of £50 is payable if you have not yet paid the module course fee at the point of cancellation.

Refunds will not be issued after these deadlines, unless:

  • Extenuating circumstances apply, which can be evidenced
  • AND no more than three teaching weeks were attended

A student who enrols for both Autumn and Spring semesters, completes the Autumn semester, and then decides not to continue in Spring may cancel their Spring module up until the Spring deadline. In these cases, the refund will be equal to the two-semester fee minus the one-semester fee, minus an administrative charge of £50.00.

Spring semester cancellations submitted before 5pm, Friday 20 January 2023 will result in a waiver of the £50.00 administrative fee. In these cases, the refund will be equal to the two-semester fee minus the one-semester fee.
