Book your place

You can select up to three PhD projects and apply for them using our online application form.

The application form lists all the projects available and you should select up to three projects, in order of preference.

You are strongly advised to make use of the opportunity to select three projects to maximise your chances of being considered for a studentship. However, please ensure that the projects that you select are relevant to your background and interests.

All sections of the application form will need to be completed in order to be considered for a DLA place.

Each project has a code that is included in the FindAPhD advert and you should select a start date of 1 October 2026.

For studentships in mathematics and statistics, refer to our guidance on project types and relevant codes.

The competition is now open and will close for applications at 5pm UK time on Thursday 15 January 2026.

Interviews for shortlisted home candidates are expected to take place in the week commencing 9 February 2026. Interviews for shortlisted international candidates are expected to take place in the week commencing 23 February 2026.

The University of Sheffield is committed to diversifying the recruitment process by considering your research potential alongside your prior academic attainment, regardless of your background or future trajectory.

If you have the potential to carry out research, we want to hear from you.

The selection process will be undertaken using a common set of core competencies.

Mathematics and statistics studentship types

When completing your application and making your selection for proposals in mathematics and statistics, the process differs slightly. All applications should be made through the EPSRC DLA portal and can fall into one of the following categories:

  1. We are offering a limited number of supervisor-led EPSRC DLA funded doctoral studentships in mathematics and statistics, which are open to Home and International students. When applying for a supervisor-led proposal, you will need to quote the relevant DLA project code(s).
  2. Home candidates can apply for a student-led proposal. Through these open studentships, you have the opportunity to work with a supervisor on your own research proposal. When applying for a student-led proposal, you will need to quote the application code S3.5-MPS-Open and include the name of the proposed supervisor in your application.
  3. It is possible for home candidates to apply for a combination of supervisor-led and student-led proposals. When applying for a combination of both, you will need to quote the application code S3.5-MPS-Open and the relevant project code(s).

This information only applies to applications in mathematics and statistics.
