Professor Schmidt will join us to discuss her new book presenting its key arguments and considering the implications for an EU that, with the ongoing pandemic, faces yet another crisis of its political economy (and, potentially, its legitimacy). The event has been organised by Dr Owen Parker, Research Fellow at SPERI, who will chair the discussion. Professor Simon Bulmer will provide thoughts and reflections on the book followed by a Q&A session with the audience.
About the speakers:
Vivien Schmidt is Jean Monnet Professor of European Integration, Professor of International Relations, and Professor of Political Science at Boston University, and a member of SPERI’s international advisory board. She has authored numerous articles and several books including, Democracy in Europe (2006) and The Futures of European Capitalism (2002). In 2019 she was the recipient of the European Union Studies Association (EUSA) Award for Lifetime Achievement in European Studies.
Simon Bulmer is Emeritus Professor of European Politics in the Department of Politics and International Relations, and an Associate Fellow at SPERI, both at the University of Sheffield. He has authored several monographs including, most recently (with William E. Paterson), Germany and the European Union: Europe’s Reluctant Hegemon? (2018). In 2016 he was the recipient of the University Association for Contemporary European Studies (UACES) Lifetime Achievement Award in European Studies.
Owen Parker is Senior Lecturer in European Politics in the Department of Politics and International Relations and Research Fellow at SPERI.
