Professor Genevieve LeBaron elected to Royal Society of Canada

Professor Genevieve LeBaron has been elected as a Member of the College of the Royal Society of Canada.

Election to the Royal Society of Canada is the highest honour that Canadian individuals can achieve in the Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences and Sciences. Each year new Members and Fellows are elected by their peers in recognition of their outstanding scholarly achievements. Everyone at SPERI would like to join together in offering their collective congratulations to Genevieve for this timely recognition of the importance and quality of her scholarship and contribution to real-world change.

Genevieve was nominated for election by Professor Peter Dauvergne (University of British Columbia), Professor David W. Blight (Yale University), and Professor Juliet Johnson (McGill University). Her Royal Society citation reads:

Genevieve LeBaron is an internationally renowned expert on modern slavery, known for her research on the business dynamics of forced labour in global supply chains. She advises leading national governments and international organizations combatting forced labour, has held ten research grants to investigate forced labour, and has won awards for her role in pioneering a rigorous and comparable empirical evidence base on forced labour in the contemporary global economy. 

Genevieve LeBaron est une experte de renommée internationale sur les questions d’esclavage moderne, reconnue pour son travail de recherche sur les pratiques commerciales de travail forcé dans les chaînes de production mondiales. Elle a notamment conseillé les gouvernements nationaux et les organisations internationales les plus investis dans la lutte contre le phénomène du travail forcé. Elle a obtenu une dizaine de subventions de recherche pour enquêter sur le travail forcé. De plus, elle a reçu des récompenses pour son rôle pionnier dans la collecte d’une base rigoureuse et comparable de données sur le travail forcé dans l’économie globale contemporaine.
