Orientation Week 2017: Key Information
Schedule for 2017 Orientation Week is now available for download!
Sign up to the Orientation mailing list to receive direct updates as new information is available!
We also run a Meet and Greet Service where our assistants will meet you at Manchester Airport and accompany you on coaches to Sheffield. If you want to use this service, you must book your place in advance using our online store. You can find further details of the Meet and Greet Service here.
Orientation Week 2017 will take place from 11-15th September. You can arrive and start taking part on any day during the week. Please note that Orientation Week is not compulsory but is strongly advised for students who feel they would benefit from getting to know the University and the city before the majority of students arrive in Sheffield.
We run most of the important information sessions multiple times in the week, so you will not miss out on these no matter what day you arrive. However, some social events only take place once so you might miss out on some of those if you arrive later in the week.
The week includes a huge range of events and activities, including:
- Tours of the campus and the Students’ Union
- Walks around the local area
- Talks from University services about the support available to students
- Workshops to help with things like academic study skills, managing your money and understanding British culture.
- Talks about immigration and University registration procedures.
- LOTS of social events where you can meet other new students, including quiz nights, barbecues, karaoke, games and craft evenings, a club night, cinema, ceilidhs (traditional dancing), sports sessions and more!
There will be a small registration fee of £5 to take part in Orientation Week, which will give you access to all of the information sessions and tours, and the majority of social events. Some social events include food, and these will require you to buy a ticket if you want to attend.
Meals are not included in the programme so you will need to pay for your own food during the week, and if you need accommodation for the week, you will need to book and pay for this separately.
You do not need to stay in Orientation accommodation to take part in Orientation Week, so if you have your own private accommodation in Sheffield, or would rather stay in a hotel, you can still take part!
If you do need accommodation for the time you are attending Orientation, University accommodation will be available. You can purchase one of the following accommodation packages, depending on what day you plan to arrive in Sheffield:
- 5 night package (Sunday 10th, Monday 11th, Tuesday 12th, Wednesday 13th, Thursday 14th September) - £150
- 4 night package (Monday 11th, Tuesday 12th, Wednesday 13th, Thursday 14th September) - £121
- 3 night package (Tuesday 12th, Wednesday 13th, Thursday 14th September) - £92
- 2 night package (Wednesday 13th, Thursday 14th September) - £63
You will need to book and pay for this in advance - please visit our online store to make your booking. All accommodation bookings include breakfast every morning during your stay and the price includes the £5 orientation registration fee (no need to complete separate registration).
All accommodation packages run through to the morning of Friday 15th September, when you will need to move to your permanent accommodation.
If you are moving into University accommodation for the rest of the semester/year, you will be able to move into your room on Friday 15th September even if this is earlier than the date stated on your accommodation contract.
If you would prefer to stay in a single sex apartment, please choose this option when booking. The deadline for booking single sex accommodation is Tuesday 29th August. The deadline for booking mixed sex accommodation is Wednesday 6th September.
