I am very proud when I think back to my year at Sheffield. I've met some of the most amazing people from all over the world.

MSc in Advanced Control and Systems Engineering

I chose the University of Sheffield because it is one of the top Universities in the UK offering MSc courses in Control and Systems Engineering. Sheffield is also the only university in the country with a Department dedicated to this discipline and to top it all off, Sheffield was rated the best university for student experience in the Times Higher Education 2014 Survey.

I studied MSc in Advanced Control and Systems Engineering. This was a really interesting course that touches on many subject areas such as Artificial intelligence, Robotics, Process Engineering and Computer Science. The course is a nice blend of theoretical, practical and lab work, and we were taught by experts in their chosen fields. I especially enjoyed the design aspect of some of the assignments, as this allowed me to explore new and original ways of doing things.

A career in research

I’ve gone straight into employment since graduating from the University. I am now working as a Research Assistant at the University of Ghent. I will be working under the Multimedia Research Group on my area of research, which is Optimising Speech Recognition Techniques.

I owe much of my success to Sheffield, as it opened my eyes to the scale and quality of research taking place in Europe. It made me realise that I want to stay in Europe and embark on a career in research in order to become the best at what I do.

Employment advice

My job hunting began in December just before graduation. I applied to a lot of companies and universities that interested me and then chose the best option.

These are the websites I used:

For graduate jobs - targetjobs.co.uk
For UK research jobs - jobs.ac.uk
For EU research jobs - academicpositions.eu

If you are reading this and are considering Sheffield, don’t think twice, it’s an amazing University!

P.S. Do sign up for the orientation week!
