Orthoptics and ophthalmology research

We conduct research to understand vision and the visual system. We work in partnership with other researchers, clinicians, patients and the public. Our research contributes to our understanding, evidence based clinical practice, care pathways and national guidelines.

Accommodation and physiological optics

Our research aims to investigate the accommodation and vergence system using a range of measures, including dynamic retinoscopy and the Plusoptix power refractor.

Eye movement disorders

This research theme focuses on phenotyping eye movement disorders, with expertise in ocular imaging and eye movement recordings. We study conditions such as nystagmus and cranial dysinnervation disorders (CCDDs), with additional skills in genotyping and pheno-genotyping.

Binocular vision and strabismus

Our research into binocular vision and strabismus focuses on how the visual system adapts and changes over time. We study treatment outcomes, including the effects of strabismus surgery on patients with psychosocial symptoms, as well as the impact of conditions such as amblyopia and diplopia.
Stereoscopic vision test.

Assessment of vision and low vision

We research the clinical assessment of vision, including computerised tests of visual acuity. Our research also includes low vision, including the impact of vision impairment, interventions and support for people with vision impairment.
