PhD opportunities in the Academic Unit of Medical Education
Our focus is on achieving student potential. One of the main research themes of the Academic Unit of Medical Education is a focus on improving clinical performance in the challenging context of professional practice. Our research is intended to practically inform local, national and global practices and policies in medical education, both undergraduate and postgraduate.
We invite applications with an interest in our overriding theme of 'Achieving Student Potential', and are appropriate for applicants with either a clinical or non-clinical background, including education, sport psychology and sociology.
We have a multi-disciplinary approach to our research and will expect successful candidates to develop appropriate collaborations with Departments across the University, especially the Academic Unit of Primary Medical Care.
Research in the Academic Unit of Medical Education
The research theme of the Academic Unit of Medical Education is “Achieving student potential”.
Our research is intended to practically inform curriculum development and implementation, both local, national and global.
Undergraduate medical education is our main focus but there is an active research interest in postgraduate medical education (both primary care and secondary care). We also welcome applications with an interest in education in dentistry and in education across a range of healthcare professions, including nursing and midwifery, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy and physiotherapy.
Our research themes are appropriate for applicants with either a clinical or non-clinical background, including education, psychology, information science and sociology.
We have a multi-disciplinary approach to our research and will expect successful candidates to develop appropriate collaborations with Departments across the University, including Education and Psychology.
Potential research opportunities within our research theme include:
- Professional development, including assessment of non-cognitive skills and behaviours, moral and ethical aspects of practice, and inter-professional working.
- Development of clinical skills and clinical diagnostic decision making, especially using a metacognitive and self-regulation perspective.
- Extending the role of patients as educators in medical and healthcare education.
- Understanding the factors that enable and constrain the impact of feedback on changing performance in medical and healthcare education.
- Development of social accountability, including local and international perspectives.
- Understanding the factors that enable and constrain students from a range of minority cultures to achieve their potential in medical and healthcare education .
- Use of new technologies and their contribution to student empowerment.
