About the test centre

Our Covid-19 Testing Centre is located in the Octagon Centre.

We’re offering free tests for staff and students using lateral flow testing kits, which provide results within 24 hours. We have the capacity to offer up to 16,000 slots per week, should we need to.

Continue to follow government guidance to minimise the risk of transmission wherever you may be.

Opening times for our Covid-19 Testing Centre

Who the test centre is for

Our Covid-19 Testing Centre is available on a voluntary basis to:

  • University of Sheffield students living in Sheffield
  • University of Sheffield staff whose role requires them to work on campus.

If you regularly visit campus, you should book regular tests at our Covid-19 Testing Centre.

Students should also arrange to take two tests at our Covid-19 Testing Centre upon returning to Sheffield.

When to book your test

If you develop symptoms of Covid-19, self-isolate, book an NHS test and inform the University. Do not attend a test at the Octagon Centre.

Please do not book a test if you have received a positive Covid-19 test result in the last 90 days.

If you are travelling outside of the UK: this test will not provide any documentation needed for overseas travel.

If you are self-isolating in the UK following overseas travel: a test result from our Covid-19 Testing Centre is not applicable to the Test and Release Scheme. For further information, read our returning to Sheffield guidance.

When to book your test

You should schedule your test for when you are on campus to avoid unnecessary travel to and from the University. Repeat tests should be at least three days apart.

Students returning to Sheffield

You should arrange to take two tests at our Covid-19 Testing Centre when you return to Sheffield:

  • Book the tests to take place as soon as possible upon returning.
  • The second test should be scheduled to take place three days after the first.
  • Plan to arrive back to Sheffield with enough time to take two tests before the start of any face-to-face teaching.
  • While awaiting test results, restrict social contact with others as much as possible.

Alternatively, those who do not take up the offer of a test upon returning must self-isolate for 10 days when returning to Sheffield.

If you have received a positive test result through the NHS within the last 90 days, you do not need to get a test when you return to Sheffield or to campus.

Students who are living in an area that offers the use of local community testing programmes should seek to get tested before their return, where this fits in with locally targeted programmes led by the Director of Public Health.
