Entry requirements

Applicants should have a 2:1 degree in a related field, a 2:2 is acceptable if combined with a minimum of 12 months relevant work experience.

Applicants with a degree in a non-relevant subject are acceptable with a minimum of 12 months relevant work experience.

Relevant work experience can include (but is not limited to): Working in the community, Educational publishing, Higher and Further Education Institutions (including English Language teaching), Local Authorities, Ministries of Education/Government Departments, NGOs, Professional Associations and Schools (Nursery, Primary and Secondary).

For students whose first language is not English, the School requires an IELTS score of 6.5 with at least 6.0 in each component, or equivalent.

Applicants without an undergraduate degree but with relevant experience are encouraged to apply and may register for a Post-Graduate Diploma in the first instance, with transfer to the Master's course on completion of satisfactory coursework in the first year. Potential applicants are encouraged to speak with the course director to discuss their qualifications and experience. Diploma and Masters students study together and all work is assessed at Masters level making for smooth transition from Diploma to Masters registration.

University of Sheffield International College

If you do not meet the entry requirements for our full time Masters degree programme, there is still an opportunity for you to consider making an application through the University of Sheffield International College to do a Pre-Masters course.

Our International College offers student pathways and progression routes to the University. If you successfully complete the Pre-Masters course, you may progress onto the full-time Masters programme.

How to apply

In making offers we are particularly interested in your personal statement. You should supply a personal statement of at least 300 words, though most good personal statements are between 500 and 750 words in length. In this personal statement you should outline your reasons for applying and any other information you want to include in support of your application.

We would like you to address the following questions:

  • Why do you want to study at Masters level?
  • How do you think your strengths will enable you to succeed at Masters level?
  • What are your reasons for wanting to study education?
  • What particularly interests you about this area?
  • Why do you want to study at the University of Sheffield?
