Relocation of substation building on Hounsfield Road

We are building a new substation to provide power/back up power for existing University buildings. The substation will also supply the new Central Teaching Laboratory that is currently in design phase ahead of a planning application later in 2024.

Architectural plan for new substation rectangular building

Work is beginning on site in February following approval of planning permission by Sheffield City Council.

The full planning application documentation is available on the Sheffield City Council planning applications website.

There is currently an existing substation located in proximity to the site, between Hounsfield Road and Leavygreave Road. The substation is essential University infrastructure that supplies power to the University’s IT Services building.

The existing substation is required to be relocated to enable the development of the intended Central Teaching Laboratories (CTL) building, which is currently being designed on behalf of the University of Sheffield, and will be the subject of a separate application for full planning permission later in 2024.

The replacement substation will provide power to the University of Sheffield IT Services building and the new CTL, as well as a limited back up supply for the Information Commons .

Four trees need to be removed from the site. The trees are semi-mature and include one ash and three hornbeam. The Lime tree also located on site will be retained.

The felling of trees is always the last resort for the University and in accordance with our policy we will be planting replacement trees at a ratio of 2:1 in the next tree planting season.
