Christmas closure period

Details of Christmas closures 2025 from different services across the University.

Off

The Christmas closure period for 2025-26 is:

  • Thursday 25 and Friday 26 December (Bank holidays)
  • Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 December (Weekend)
  • Monday 29, Tuesday 30 and Wednesday 31 December (University closure days)
  • Thursday 1 January (Bank holiday)
  • Friday 2 January (additional University closure day)

Library - Information Commons

Information Commons (IC) will be open 24/7 throughout the Christmas and New Year period apart from being closed for all users between 23:59 on Sunday 4 January to 08:00 on Monday 5 January whilst essential maintenance work is being carried out.

Western Bank Library and Health Sciences Library (Royal Hallamshire Hospital) will close at 17:00  on Wednesday 24 December and reopen at the usual opening times (09:00) on Monday 5 January.

The Diamond will close at 18:00 on Wednesday 24 December and will reopen at 07:00 on Monday 5 January.

Students' Union

The Students’ Union building will close at 15:00 on 24 December with last entry to the building being at 14:30. It will reopen at 09:00 on Monday 5 January (Coffee Revolution open from 08:00).

The Students Union Nursery will close at 13:00 on 24 December 2025 and reopen 08:00 on Monday 5 January. You can access the Nursery’s full calendar on the SU Website.

Access to all other buildings

Access control to buildings will be on the ‘out of hours’ setting from the usual times on Wednesday 24 December and reopen from 08:00 on Friday 5 January.

Out of hours access

If you require out-of-hours access to support essential research activities during the Christmas break, please follow departmental processes and input your information into this Google Form by 16:00 Monday 8 December. This means that the Security Supervisor Team can pass on authorised access details to relevant colleagues.

All staff requiring access must have already completed out-of-hours training. Departments need to complete all appropriate risk assessments for the activities that are being undertaken.

Sport and Physical Activity

UoS Sport & Physical Activity is open, operating limited hours through the festive period with some closure days.  Further information will be provided here once it is available.

University Health Service

The University Health Service (UHS) is open Monday to Friday 08:00 - 18:00 (including University closure days).

The UHS will be closed on weekends and bank holidays - Thursday 25 and Friday 26 December (Bank holidays) and Thursday 1 January (Bank holiday).

What to Do When the UHS is Closed

If medical assistance is needed when the UHS is closed, please use one of the following services:

  • For Urgent Medical Advice (non-life-threatening):
    • Call 111 or visit 111.nhs.uk for medical advice and to be directed to the most appropriate service.
    • Alternatively, the Sheffield Walk-in Centre is open from 08:00 to 22:00 every day, including weekends and bank holidays.
  • For Emergencies (life-threatening):

Call 999 immediately or go to the nearest A&E department.
