Aim

To enable students to develop as advanced clinical practitioners in Ophthalmology in delivering high-quality, compassionate and efficient care to patients.

Within paediatric ophthalmology advanced practice, it is imperative that clinical practitioners are highly effective in managing and balancing uncertainty and risk. They need expertise with decision-making tools and frameworks, in order to take management and leadership positions that will most benefit patients. They need to be effective educators, to ensure colleagues adopt the strategies and changes implemented.

Leadership and education in ophthalmology needs to adapt to local and national organisational strategies and agendas and implement reflective learning from significant patient events. 

The aim of this module is to facilitate effective clinical leadership and education for practitioners specialising in ophthalmology. It represents two of the key pillars of advanced clinical practice set out by Health Education England and aligns to the Advanced Clinical Practice framework. Students will be equipped with models regarding decision making and managing and balancing risk in the midst of an often evolving, incomplete and complex clinical picture. They will develop effective advanced clinical practice, using resources appropriately, in order to relieve clinical pressure on Ophthalmologists.

Students will critically explore and analyse theories and evidence underpinning clinical practice improvements, critical decision-making in ophthalmology and service redesign. Students will develop resourcefulness for creatively providing high-quality care and implementing transformational change, which positively impacts patients and colleagues. 


Overview of content

Clinical Education in Ophthalmology (approximately 15 credits) includes themes such as models of development and learning in clinical ophthalmology; educating others to educate others; achievement, alignment and inspiring others; theories of learning, self-knowledge and leadership.

Clinical Leadership in Ophthalmology (approximately 15 credits) includes themes such as models of leadership in ophthalmology, clinical leadership for patients; leadership for service provision, evidence-based leadership; systems change and leading a team within Ophthalmology.


Who can study this module

The programme is a second-year module within the MMedSci ACP Ophthalmology (paediatrics) programme but can be taken as a standalone module by experienced eye-care practitioners (Optometrists, Orthoptists and Ophthalmic Nurses). Content will be delivered through blended learning using online lectures, tutorials, and independent and work-based learning.


Awards

Two 30-credit standalone modules from the MMedSci ACP Ophthalmology (paediatrics) programme can be combined to gain a PG Certificate in ACP Ophthalmology.

You will receive a certificate of completion once you have successfully completed the module.
