40 credits at level 6 (degree). Students undertaking undergraduate degree programmes must have completed 80 credits including the research appreciation and application unit or the evidence-based practice unit before they can commence the dissertation.

Who is it for?

This unit is suitable for qualified nurses who are undertaking this unit as part of a degree via the CPD route.


Overview of content:

The literature review should reflect the student´s ability to critically apply theory to practice, reach conclusions based on the literature evidence and make achievable recommendations for practice.


What is it about?

This unit requires them to undertake a substantial piece of written work in the form of a critical review of the literature on a topic relevant to their area of practice. They will be expected to demonstrate their knowledge of research theory and the specialist area of practice in which they are working as well as how their findings can be applied to practice.


How does it enhance practice?

On successful completion practitioners will have had the opportunity to produce a substantial and critical review of the current literature in an identified issue related to their context of practice. This can be used to enable recommendations for the development of future practice.


Mode of Assessment:

A 10,000-word critical review of the literature on a topic of the student's choice.
