Travelling to and from Sheffield

Sheffield is in the unique position of lying between four international airports and has good rail links to some of Britain's largest cities.

Air links

Sheffield is in the unique position of lying between four international airports - all within around one hour's travel time.

  • Manchester International Airport: 35 miles from Sheffield, the main international gateway outside London can be reached by train in under an hour.
  • East Midlands Airport: 47 miles south of Sheffield, East Midlands Airport services more than two million passengers a year and provides a large number of domestic and European flights.
  • Leeds Bradford International Airport: 40 miles north of Sheffield, Leeds Bradford operates flights to the UK and Europe.
  • Humberside International Airport: 60 miles away, Humberside International Airport offers scheduled flights to Europe.

Rail links

Sheffield is easy to get to via train, with direct routes to and from some of Britain's largest cities:

  • London: direct trains to London St Pancras in just 2 hours, running every 30 minutes. You can travel on to Paris or Brussels via St Pancras station.
  • Manchester: direct trains in just 50 minutes.
  • Edinburgh: trains (many direct) in around 3 hours and 30 minutes.
  • Birmingham: direct trains in under 1 hour 30 minutes.

Tickets can be booked on line in advance via Trainline, which may be at a discount price depending on how in advance they are booked.  Alternatively, they can be bought from ticket machines or ticket booths from some stations.

Road links

  • North to South: the M1 motorway runs past Sheffield on its route from London to Leeds. The M1 is just a 15 minute journey from Sheffield city centre.
  • East to West: the M62 motorway travels from coast to coast between Hull in the east and Liverpool in the west, via Leeds and Manchester.

Public transport in Sheffield

The city in Sheffield and surrounding districts are well served by an extensive network of bus and tram services.  These are frequent and a popular choice for transport for local people.  Stops are at fixed points and you pay on board.

Sheffield Supertram

There are four tram routes in Sheffield.  These routes give you easy access to the most popular places in and around Sheffield and also Rotherham.  There are trams stops close to many of the main University of Sheffield buildings.

There are a wide range of daily, weekly and monthly ticket options.  This includes combination tickets with other kinds of public transport, as well as park and ride options.

Bus travel

There is an extensive bus network in and around Sheffield, including around the University of Sheffield buildings.

Cycling

Cycling is a good way to help keep fit and can be quicker than travelling by car in congested conditions.  

Cycle parking

There are over 1,400 cycle parking spaces both on main campus and the residences.

The Cycle Hub on main campus offers secure storage for your bike while you are at work.  There is also access to showers.  The Cycle Hub is accessible via your staff Ucard (once enabled) between 7am-7pm Monday to Friday.  

Bike hire schemes and bike sales

Staff and students can pay a deposit and hire a bike per semester or for a year at the online store.

There is an eBike hire scheme for staff called Try B4U Bike.  If you try one and like it you can buy one via the Cycle to Work scheme available to staff.

Walking

Most University of Sheffield buildings are within short walking distance of each other and the city centre is on the doorstep.

Not only is the urban environment easy to navigate, Sheffield is known as the Outdoor City, with over 200 parks, woodlands and public gardens in its boundaries.
